Donny was born at Angurugu Mission on Groote Eylandt 1947. In 1957 he left the Eylandt to further his education on Thursday IslandQld. Donny returned to Groote Eylandt in 1968 to start a Fitter and turner apprenticeship with BHP Gemco. He worked at GEMCO for 10 years, during this time Donny worked at Milner Bay and the old Crusher Plant as a Leading Hand for Fixed Plant.

Donny has been a strong supporter to the Groote Eylandt Community, in fulfilling positions as Council Coordinator, Town advisor and on the board of the Land Council and Groote Eylandt trust.
Donny carves and paints, using traditional skills taught to him by his talented father, Gerry Blitner. Donny Blitner is a well recognised artist from Groote Eylandt.
